Sigüés. Tower of the pomar family

The position of Sigüés near the border with Navarre and next to the Santiago Pilgrimage Route has left its mark on the streets of the village. The Hospital of St Anne, an institution established to attend to the needs of pilgrims arriving from both Asso-Veral and Roncal on this secondary branch of the “Camino” is an example of this, as is the surviving tower or castle of the Pomar family, barons of Sigüés until the Spanish Constitution of 1812, when the jurisdictional power of feudal estates disappeared. Prior to this they had been patrons of the construction of the hospital in the 16th century and had donated a series of altarpieces and works of art to the parish church in the 18th century.

The tower of the Pomar family is the last vestige of the wall surrounding the stronghold of Sigüés and defending it against the kingdoms of Navarre and Castille. The large ashlars, the chains of the drawbridge and the heavy doorways make it easy to imagine the north of the village in medieval times, defended by the natural barrier of the river gorge – the Foz de Sigüés. It was a royal town, later repudiated and was owned by the Aznarez, Cornel and Jordan de Urriés (lords of Ayerbe or Biniés) families until it was passed on to the Pomar family at the end of the 15th century as a barony. That the tower has kept this name, aside from the role of the family in the history of the village, is probably due in part to the coat of arms displayed on it and which shows three apples (pomas).

A characteristic of traditional local architecture which survives in this village is the conical inglenook chimney with triangular openings, typical of the Canal de Berdún area. There are very few examples left except those in Sigüés or in the villages of Lorbés, Asso-Veral and Majones.
