Lorbes. Church of San Miguel. 16th century

The 16th century parish church of San Miguel (St Michael) in Lorbes is a simple building with a single nave in four sections and a groundplan in the shape of a Latin cross. The square bell tower rises from the western end and next to it is a attractive entrance with a rounded archway.

The building is covered by star-ribbed vaults, except for the transept and the sacristy which have simple rib vaults. The valuable main altarpiece of Barroque style created at the end of the 17th century is the centrepiece of the interior decoration. An inscription on the piece itself indicates that it was gilded in 1706.

Structurally, it is divided into two levels of three sections each, which are separated by Solomonic columns. The bench is decorated with reliefs that show different saints and two narrative scenes: La Anunciación (The Annunciation) and the Visitation of the Virgin to her cousin St Isabel. The sagrarium occupies the central section and its door is decorated with a “Ecce Homo” relief.

There are two Mannerist altarpieces in the transept which date from around the 1600s. The one in the north trasept is dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. The altarpiece in the south transept is similar in layout and is dedicated to St Sebastian.

Other altarpieces of interest are those dedicated to San Francisco de Asis (St Francis of Assisi) and the Holy Christ which date from the 18th century. The choir ballustrade at the western end, a beautifully carved 16th-century piece, is also of special interest.
