This is the first village in the Aspe valley on the road to Spain. For some time it was considered the frontier town of the Bearn. The Charter of Aspe was a treaty which governed relations between the Aspe community and the viscount of Bearn. If the latter wanted to enter the Aspe territory, he had to place the front legs of his horse in the Too stream and lower his sword. After exchanging a hostage, the viscount would be allowed into the Aspe valley.

The first written record of the Charter of Aspe dates from the beginning of the 12th century and was upheld until 1642. Nowadays, Escot is famous for the Tour de France. The cyclists traverse the village on the way to the Marie Blanque Pass. Its church, which bears the date 1674 on the lintel above the doorway, was restored in the 19th century.
