“Ossa la bien aimada” (Osse the well-loved) “Tu, deu Valon” (You, from the little valley). “Be n’ès la hilha ainada” (You are the eldest daughter). “Tu n’ès la Flor” (You are the Flower). These are the words that the poet Xavier Navarrot dedicated to this village curled up at the feet of the Layens. Walking through the village, you will discover medieval houses with their impressive ashlars and traditional buildings decorated with balconies and galleries.
Osse is not only well looked after, it also has an important religious history, with catholic and protestant communities living peacefully together to the present day. Important protestant figures that deserve a mention are the aurostère (a woman who improvises funeral chants for the dead) Marie Asserquet, or “White Mary”, who gave the aurost (personalised chants for the dead) their noble titles. Also, the Cadier Brothers, pioneers of “Pyreneeism” and authors of accounts of mountain races.
